Dollar Tree couponable items

I did a quick scan at the Dollar Tree last week and here is what I found that was couponable.  I'm sure their inventory changes a lot, so let me know if you catch any items that I'm missing.  A lot of the stuff at Dollar Tree is the trial sizes, so make sure your coupons say ANY SIZE.

  • Hefty Ziplock (small count boxes)
  • Ajax
  • Palmolive
  • Comet
  • Puffs
  • Scotties tissue (is that Scott brand?)
  • Soft-soap
  • Dial bar soap
  • Jergens bar soap
  • Garnier fructis (mini shampoos....so coupon would have to say ANY size)
  • Hunts ketchup
  • Betty crocker mashed potato packets
  • Dominos sugar
  • Bumblebee tuna
  • Betty crocker brownie and cookie pouches
  • Reynolds wrap (it's the small size..20 sq ft)
  • Wylers light water flavor packets
  • Arizona tea
  • Propel
  • Gatorade
  • Campbell's soup
  • Colaget - small size
  • Degree
  • Speed stick

new stores accepting manufacturer coupons

So I've been bad about posting anything on here in awhile.  As more and more friends are hearing that I coupon, I find myself getting more requests to teach them.  So I'll try to do a how to get started tab on the top to go along with organization tips.

I did, however, wanted to add a little tidbit about what new stores are now accepting coupons (at least new to me).

1. Pete's Market
2. Cermak Produce
3. Dollar Tree (only some Chicago stores are doing this...they are testing it out)

Yup...the DOLLAR TREE!

I took a quick scan of the store the other day and will post some of the items I found in there that are couponable.

Some unexpected savings

I've been meaning to post this for quite some time, as I recently learned of two great couponie deals at some of the more non-traditional stores for us couponers.

First...some baby shower gift deal opportunities (I have a lot of babies in my life).

Did you know that Buy Buy Baby is owned by the same company that owns Bed, Bath & Beyond?  Yup....those great continual BB&B coupons can be used at Buy Buy Baby.  Not sure if you can use multiple ones at the same time, but I know that the 20% off coupon will be great for new parents!

The other surprise is
Apparently, when buying anything extensive, it will be worth first checking if the on-line price is lower than the physical store price.  If it is, make sure to ask if they will honor the on-line price!  Most will.

Two coupon inserts this weekend

Double Saving Divas just posted details on what to expect in this Sunday's tribune.  I don't care much for the coupons in the Red Plum, but there are some decent ones in the SmartSource that will be good for a future sale.

As usual, I'll be purchasing two papers :)

How many papers should you buy?

Everyone always asks me how many papers I buy?  This might seem like a silly question to most folks, but if you coupon like I do, you know that having multiple copies of particular coupons is key to getting the best deals most of the times.

I "think" I first read this on Jill Cataldo's site (I could totally be making this up), but apparently a good rule of thumb to follow is to buy a paper for every member of your household plus one.  For larger families, this may seem crazy...but believe me when I tell you that despite paying more for the extra papers, I always get my money back (plus more) in free purchases.  So it is worth the extra hassle of sorting and clipping.

I will sometimes buy more than one paper if there are a lot of inserts.  I believe I bought 4 papers the weekend of May 1st, but that's only because there were 6 coupon inserts in there...and there were many high value coupons.  For example, let's just say that I have bought 8 packs of razors for FREE with these papers alone.  With razors costing about $8 each individual package, I would say the initial investment of roughly $8 that weekend has paid off immensely.  I don't have a large stockpile though...I share my good deals with my parents and younger sister as neither one is really interested in learning how to coupon.  So I'll take one for the team and help them out when I can.

Most weekends, I stick to buying 2 papers for myself.

If you aren't ready to make that leap, Mashupmom often posts up what's coming in the paper this weekend and gives you a few of the better coupons she sees in it.  Here is the link for this weekend's post on how many papers you should buy.

Daily Deal Sites

I'll shortly be adding a link to my page about great daily deal sites (a la Groupon).  Though the daily emails can get overwhelming, they still provide fantastic deals!

First - I would HIGHLY recommend setting up a coupon email for this purpose, if anything.  I have a coupon email for all my store coupons, and these daily deal site emails also go to that.  This helps eliminate the email clutter in your personal account.

So what are some of my favorite sites?

I love Groupon, but there are often national sales in effect that you can buy groupons for in individual cities.  Not sure how many of these still exist (as many of these national deals now clearly state only one purchase per email), but every now and then there is something.

I clearly don't have the time and energy to look through every single groupon page, but there is a way to find out quickly what's out there!  This is especially great when you have travel plans and want to keep tabs on a particular location.

There is a site called GroupRoundup.com that displays all the current groupons on one page.  Fantastic!

Another great resource that nabs all the deals from ALL the daily deal sites is called Yipit.  They literally ask you what city you're interested in getting emails from and they find everything for you.  You will get info on LivingSocial, Groupon , Plum District, Buy With Me, etc.  You get the picture!  You also have the option of signing up for the National deal alerts.

Locally (Chicago), there is also a newer site called LiveCheapr.com  They are a smaller company (for now) and are primarily, if not exclusively, focused on local deals.  I find that the deals they showcase are often new and unique to what you see on the other sites.  Full disclosure: I know one of the founder's of this site and do not get compensated for this promotion.  I just want to share another location for unique, fun finds on the cheap!

Hope these are useful!

an update

I know, I know...I keep promising to be better about posting on here.  I will once again try to keep to that promise.  Even if it's just links!

However, in the meantime, when you are looking for up to date information on great local deals, please visit some of the links on the right hand side tool bar.  These are the sites I turn to for efficiency sake!  There is no need to re-invent the wheel (or spend HOURS couponing like on that tv show).   I literally, check Saturday night any drug store deals that I need to try and grab on Sunday.  Then I wait until Monday night to look at the grocery store deals so that I can shop by Wednesday.

My original intention in starting this blog was to help my friends and family learn a few tricks.  It seems to have worked immensely as I now find myself catching up to their posts on our group facebook page about great finds.

I've even found myself hosting couponing training sessions for newbies in our circle.  Now, I don't always know all the answers, but I know how valuable it it is to have someone walk you through the circulars and methods of organizing your coupons.  I have to thank my friend Melissa O for giving my own personal training session.

No coupons this weekend

Holiday weekends = No Coupon Inserts in the Sunday paper (normally)

This Memorial Day weekend there are no inserts scheduled, so no need to rush out and nab one.

This will give me a chance to catch up on the clipping of inserts that I have piling up.  Whew!

Oops! Correction about my Walgreens contact solution post

So I'm still absolutely learning how this whole couponing business works...case in point, my comment on the previous blog about rolling Register Rewards.

You CANNOT earn Register Rewards for an item that you paid for with Register Rewards.

What do I mean by this?  Well, today I stopped by Walgreens to pick up some more contact solution.  I thought...why bother paying for it, when I had an $8 Register Reward from yesterday's purchase.

When I paid for the contact solution with the Reward, I was shocked to find out that I didn't get one back!  Oh well...still FREE contact solution :)

I was paid to take items out of CVS today :)

CVS has some good deals going on if you have the right coupon match-up.

At the beginning of this month, there were a mess of coupon inserts in the paper...so I bought three copies that week.  Well that investment has SERIOUSLY paid itself back twice, thrice, etc. times over!

CVS has a current deal on Purex laundry detergent.  Purex is on sale for $1.98 (limit of 4).
In the May 1st Red Plum, there is a coupon for $1 off 1 bottle of Purex.  I had three copies...so I bought three....bringing my total cost for the three bottles to $2.94.

I'm starting to gather a little stockpile of laundry detergent...which is funny because I don't have a washing machine in my building and often take my laundry home to my parents' house or a friend's home.  So guess who is getting all that detergent - MOM and DAD :)  For all those years of supporting me, it's fun to see their faces when I show up with bags of stuff I've gotten for free that they no longer have to pay for.  Yay!

They also had a great deal on Revlon nailpolish.  For each $4.99 bottle, you got $4.00 in Extra Care bucks.  There was a matching coupon in the May 8th Smart Source for $2 off 1 Revlon cosmetic.  My teller was pretty confused as to what constituted a cosmetic, but he eventually gave me the $2 off each bottle (I had three coupons for this too).  So my $14.97 total cost for nailpolish was brought down to  $8.97.

This means that my total bill was $11.95 with taxes BUT I got $12 back in Extra Care Bucks (due to the nailpolish).

I was technically paid a NICKLE to take all those items home with me!

FREE contact solution at Walgreens

If you wear contacts, now is the time to stock up on contact solution!  Walgreens has complete multi-puropse solution (12oz) on sale for $7.99.  You will pay $7.99 but also get back $7.99 in Register Rewards (they round up so you get $8). This in theory equals FREE contact solution.

You can only get one Register Reward per transaction...so don't think you can buy 5 at once and get $40 back.

Instead, what you do is buy one...get the Register Reward.  Then go back, pick up another one and use the Register Reward to pay for it....but you'll AGAIN receive a Register Reward for $8.  ROLLING is key here :)

Update:  You CANNOT earn Register Rewards from an item that was paid for with Register Rewards.  So Rolling doesn't exist at Walgreens.  Sorry!  This was new to me!

I haven't rolled my register rewards because I need to go get some groceries (and you can use the Register Rewards at the grocery store), but I'm pondering using one of $8 slips to stock up for me and mom (who is new to the contact world).

Questions about Walgreens Register Rewards?

I've had several questions about Register Rewards this week....what are they?  can you use them at other stores? etc. So I wanted to share a great link I found that gives you the basic Register Rewards 101.

http://www.whosaidnothinginlifeisfree.com/2010/04/walgrens-register-rewards-q/

I don't think the blog above answers the question about where you can use Register Rewards.  When the Register Rewards prints out, look at it to determine whether or not it's a general Manufacturer coupon (most of them are).  From what I understand, this means that you can use them anywhere that accepts coupons.  I often use my Register Rewards to get groceries at Jewel!  I'm assuming that they would also work at other stores, but I honestly haven't tried that yet.

How do you know how you can get Register Rewards from purchasing an item?  Well, I go off the store circulars.  They will literally tell you that if you purchase an item, you'll get x number of Register Rewards.  What this means is that you'll pay the full price up-front, but you'll get a Catalina for a specified amount to spend on your next order.

I hope that makes sense!

Magazines

Some magazines are also good sources of coupons.

There is one magazine in particular that is a good monthly purchase - All You.  I've only seen it on the shelves at Walmart which I rarely shop at (due to personal views on the company). I recently subscribed to it, but have read that sometimes the one purchased at the store has some unique coupons...so we'll see if the subscription pans out.

They have a good website too (link to the right).

I also get InStyle and Martha Stewart Living....both have some coupons, so if they are magazines that you are interested in personally, I would recommend a possible subscription.

If you're going to stick with one, then I think All You is the best option.

A review of how to start

I've recently enjoyed learning that some unexpected people in my life have been inspired by my couponing, so I thought I would add a refresher on where to start!

First and foremost - buy the Sunday paper!  In Chicago, the Tribune has the best coupons (in terms of amounts).  For example, this weekend, the Sun Times only had a Red Plum coupon insert, but the Trib had the Red Plum and a Smartsource.  So I would highly suggest opting for the Trib.

Second - figure out what storage system works for you.  I like to look at all my coupons, so I've put them in a binder using baseball card holders.  Look under the tab called Organization for examples. There are other ways of organizing your coupons...I would suggest looking on Jill Cataldo's site for her tips (she's listed on the gurus to the right).

Now...how do I plan for my shopping excursions?  Well, for the most part, I go to the gurus.  My main three folks are Jill Cataldo, Mashup Mom and Double Saving Divas.  Jill and Mashup Mom are very detailed.  Some people find Mashup Mom easier to read, but I always check both because they sometimes have different finds.

Double Saving Divas are my newest discovery thanks to the TLC show Extreme Couponing.  I have some ethical issues with the show (people are "buying" coupons from clipping services which in theory make the coupon void - which could come screw the rest of us couponers that do things correctly).  I also think the show is more about exposing the psychological impact of going extreme....I think it showcases more of the hoarding tendencies of these stockpiles.  HOWEVER, the Double Saving Divas have a pretty active facebook page and quickly showcase freebie items on their webpage, so I always check there too.

When I have time, I'll pick up a Sunday paper on Saturday night.  I'll then check all three blogs late at night for any deals posted for Saturday (especially at Walgreens and CVS because their inventory is small and replaced slowly).  If there is a great deal, I get up early on Sunday and take advantage of it before the inventory disappears.

On Monday morning, I'll look to Jill Cataldo and Mashup Mom for Deals of the Week at my local grocery stores.  The goal is always to go grocery shopping before Thursday because there is always a secondary deal going on at the grocers from Sunday-Wednesday.  Those extra deals will disappear on Thursday-Saturday.  So make sure to check them out!

At the grocery store, always look for extra coupon booklets.  Check the customer service counter, the deli counter and displays.  This weekend I was trying to score a Coke coupon booklet at Jewel, but my Jewel was out.  I'll have to try stopping by another on this week and see if can nab one for myself.

Anyway, that was a fast and dirty review of how I've started doing things.  It's really all about being organized and devoting some time to the process!

Whoa....my viewership is HUGE!!!

So I honestly started this blog because I wanted to teach my family and friends how to coupon better.  Everyone deserves to get a good deal on much needed items, so why not learn how to get at the BEST possible price, right?

Well, holy moly...I just checked the stats on this blog, and I was BLOWN away by how many "strangers" must be reading my silly blog.  The numbers are almost unreal.....holy cow.

For real, I was dumb-founded!

I promise to do a better job at posting some of my favorite links to get coupons and other blogs that I follow to keep tabs on the latest news for the best deals.

Honestly, I'm humbled that so many people come to this site and hope that it's useful!

Walgreens freebies this week

From what I've seen, Walgreens had the best deals for me this week.  There are some deals at CVS but it's not really anything I need.  Apparently there is a good deal on Xtra detergent though...so go check that out if you need to stock up.  I may consider a visit there later in the week just so I have some detergent on hand while it's at a good price.

Anyway, there are a few "freebies" at walgreens.

Carefree liners (also free at CVS).  There is a $1 off coupon in this weekend's Smart Source.  The liners are $0.99 at Walgreens AND CVS...so get your free liners.

2-pack REACH advanced design toothbrushes - are 2/$6.00 and you get $2.00 in Register Rewards
- if you buy 2 papers this weekend, you can use $2 off one toothpaste ...meaning you'll get $2 off the total, and you'll get $2.00 in Register Rewards...so FREE toothbrushes

Colgate Dental Care - 2/$600 and you get $4.00 in Register Rewards
- I had a $1 off 1 toothbrush coupon from a while ago, but last week there was a $0.75 off 1 coupon in the smart source.  Since I had bought multiple papers last weekend, I actually have three of this :)
- my first transaction I'm gonna do in the morning will use the $1 off and of the $0.75 off...which means I'll pay $4.25 for the 2 toothbrushes and get $4.00 in Register Rewards
- I'll try a second transaction at another Walgreens and use two of the $0.75 off coupons...so I'll pay $4.50 and get $4.00 in Register Rewads

This means I "should" be getting 4 toothbrushes for the total price of $0.75

Here's hoping they are stocked up for me to do so in the morning!

May 2011 debt update

I mentioned that I was going to start being better at posting on this blog...so here goes the latest update on my debt elimination progress.

I've decided to split my debt into two categories....credit card debt and non-school loans (like my new car note). Putting the school loan figure would be a pitiful percentage decrease that isn't even worth tracking until I can double up on payments.

My goal is to eliminate the credit card debt by my next birthday (Jan 2012) - I wanted to give myself a reasonable time line (because unexpected things do happen) and am pretty sure I can make it happen!

I'm giving a comparison from 2010...to the current figures and boy did it make me smile to see the progress! While I can't attribute my couponing alone to the total decrease, I know that some of the money I have saved has gone to pay off my credit cards.  Yay!

Cheap Aveeno Sunscreen at Target

This I found thanks to Jill Cataldo.

Aveeno Naturals items are on sale at Target, and if you buy two items, you'll get a $10 gift card.

Some of the sunscreen is $10 (some are a little bit more).  I like the spray sunscreen, so I nabbed two of these.  I don't normally buy Aveeno because it's pricey and the SPF is super high for me, but I do burn easily and I hang out with a lot of my little munchkins.  So it'll be good for the first time in the sun coverage and for any of my godkids/cousins who come to the beach with me.

Anyway...there was a $3 off 2-Aveeno Naturals products in the Smart Source from 3/27 and 4/17.  I only clipped one and must have donated the other, otherwise, I would have tried to do this deal twice.  you stack this $3 off coupon with the $1 coupon from the Target website.

You end up paying $16 for both sunscreens, but get $10 back in a gift card.

So you're really only paying $6 for both!

I got some more free goodies for you!

I had a little shopping driving adventure today.....why?  Well, it's because I didn't learn about the freebies early enough, so I'm a day behind which means that all the good couponers had already gotten to the goodies.

I thought I was going to have to wait until later in the week when the stores restocked, but I thankfully have a slew of walgreens and CVS stores on one patch of my drive.  I found almost everything I was looking for.

Okay, so what are the goodies?  Let me first give the kudos to JillCataldo.com and Mashupmom.com for the tips.

CVS
  • I mentioned the free toothpaste in my previous post.  With the coupons I had in my stash, I actually made money in that transaction.  I paid $4.04 for 2 tubes of toothpaste, but got back $5.58 to spend on my next order!  So I made $1.54 in that transaction.
  • Ivory 3-pack bars are currently $0.99...I had 3-$1 coupons from the Proctor & Gamble coupon book this weekend (yes, I bought three papers this weekend because it was FULL of coupons).  So what did I have to pay at the end...basically just the tax.  My total for the (3)3-pack Ivory bars....$0.26!  Note:  I saw these same ivory bar packs for $0.95 at my Target, so if you're out of luck at CVS, try there!

So my total spent at CVS for all these goodies...2 tubes of toothpastes and 3(3)-pack Ivory bars.....I was paid $1.28 to take these very useful items out of the store and into my teeny stockpile :)

Walgreens

So this isn't very eco-friendly, but apparently shaving razors go on sale pretty regularly (often for free), so I've been told to keep an eye out for deals when you can get them for free.  This week, the deal was on disposable Noxzema 4-pack razors.  They are on sale for $3.99, but you get a $3 Register Rewards for each purchase.  Meaning, they "in theory" only cost $0.99 because you'll have $3 to spend on your next order.  In this weekend's RedPlum insert (yup, the paper I had multiple copies of), there was $2.00 off coupon which would make this purchase free!

I kinda messed up on this one and didn't make as much as I could.  I actually tried buying two razors at once with the two coupons and I expected to get $6 in Register Rewards.  I only got $3 back :(  So either the machine was out of paper, or you can only get one Register Reward per transaction.  So I need to investigate that one a bit.

So rather then getting them all for free, I paid $7.76 for all three, but got back $6 in Register Rewards total.  So I really only paid $1.76 for the razors.

Target

I didn't get the freebie I was looking for here because they were out of stock. There is still a deal on Nivea body wash at most stores ($3.04) that I took advantage of last week.  There is a $3 off coupon on the Target website, which means that you'll only pay $0.04 for it!  I wasn't lucky to find it last week at my local Target and instead found it at the one downtown for a slightly higher price ($3.60).  I nabbed it because $0.60 for great body wash is still a deal to me!

I'll have to stalk my Target this week and see if I can get lucky enough to score another one this week!

want some free toothpaste?!

It's been quite awhile since I posted anything...and it's frankly because so many of the other national blogger's make things so easy for me to not post.

After spending an evening going over some couponing tips with a gal pal, I realized that there are still so many of my friends that are interested in learning how to coupon but don't know where to start.  So I'm going to offer a couple of tips and deals when I can.  Most of the time, I'll give credit where credit is due and refer to you other sites, but I'll do my best to offer some great deals.

An awesome deal happening right now is the "free" toothpaste at CVS.

I've put the free in quotes because you do have to pay upfront for it, but with the Extra Care Bucks received (when using your Extra Care Card), you'll pay nothing for it.

Here's the better deal though!  If you bought the Sunday paper this weekend (I actually bought more than one this weekend because there were sooo many coupons), you'll find a $0.75 off coupon for Colgate.  Which means that instead of paying $2.79 for the toothpaste, you'll actually only pay $2.04....but then you'll be paid back from CVS $2.79 for it.

So you're actually getting paid to take toothpaste out of the store!!!

There is a limit of buying two...so if you bought two papers, you can get the deal on both tubes of toothpaste!

Expired Coupons to support our troops overseas

Now that Dominick's has updated their coupon policy much to the chagrin of us trying to super-coupon, many of us are left with a slew of expired coupons.

So what can you do with them?

Well, someone gave me a tip that military families can use them, so I started to do some digging.  Low and behold, I found a source that updates the list of places overseas that you mail your coupons to.  Looks like some bases are getting flooded (which is great), but there are others that haven't asked couponers to stop sending the coupons.

So this weekend, I'll be updated my coupon binder and making a nice little package to mail out.

Here are the details:
  • Military bases outside of the USA will accept manufacture coupons up to 6 months past their expiration date.
  • They can use manufacture coupons only, no store coupons are accepted.
  • You can mail your expired coupons directly to a military Family Services Center or Commissary (military base grocery store).
  • When mailing packages to a military address (APO or FPO addresses), standard domestic rates apply.
  • You can pick up FREE USPS mailing envelopes and boxes from any Post Office.

Some crafty giveaways!

This past weekend, I took part in a fun webcast from CHA (Craft & Hobby Association).  I got to hear from a lot of designers and crafting manufacturers.  If you know me well, you know that this is a little piece of heaven for me!  Anyway, I've signed up for a ton of newsletters, facebook pages and tweets from the various experts.

Today, I get to bring you details on a contest from Aleene's Tacky Glue.  You know the stuff, right?!  It's amazing glue.  I use it a lot on fabric based items, but it's great on so much stuff.

In honor of Aleene's 87th birthday, they are having a mega giveaway worth $87.

You can even have multiple entries by doing things like this right now (blogging about it).  Yay me for the double entry!

If you don't think of yourself as a crafter or see no need for the glue, then think of ME!  Enter and give me the prize if you win.  LOL!

In all serious...it's amazing stuff.  I've been using it for years!

It's been awhile, I know!

It's been a crazy past couple of months, but I promised myself that I would be back to the couponing full-force.  I sort of fell off the wagon when I took off on vacation and bought Christmas presents (though I had bought many ahead of time due to early deals).

I'm happy to report that my debt is still going down - yay me!  I did, however, have to buy a new car and new computer - so those are now added to the total debt, but I'm concentrating my savings on the high interest credit cards that don't include the car and computer.

Anyway, if you are a Coca-Cola product fiend like me.....CVS has the best deal this week.  12-packs are $3/pack (already a good deal)....but if you buy $15 worth, you'll get $5 in Extra Care Bucks.
So you'll basically you'll be getting 5 packs for $10!

The also have 16.9oz Crest Pro-Health mouthwash for $3.99 with $3.99 in Extra Care Bucks back!  Um, yes....I'll take some free mouthwash!

There are other deals....but these were the best ones I saw that didn't require me to look through my coupons (I need to re-organize and re-commit myself to the clipping so I need this weekend).

Happy shopping!
